This is a highly structured program with set assignments and a defined outcome.
The goal is for the clinician to achieve a level in which they are competent to practice independently, build a dementia caseload, and to mentor others.
It is structured in the following way:
- A clinician must request entry into the program.
A Dementia Care Specialist team member will screen the applicant to determine appropriateness into the program
Requirements include:
- Must have completed the 13 contact hour “Dementia Therapy: Achieving Positive Outcomes for the Dementia Patient” offered by Dementia Care Specialists, Inc.
- Must have evidence of intermediate level of education (such as Dementia Therapy: Intermediate Class offered by Dementia Care Specialists)
- Must have at least 3 years clinical experience in a geriatric environment
- Must currently be providing direct patient care at least 25% of the time
- Must participate in an interview with a DCS team member to discuss motivation for participating in the program
- If accepted into the program, an on-site evaluation visit (6 hours) to evaluate your skills in using the theory for the dementia patient is scheduled.
A formal evaluation is completed with goals and anticipated time frames to complete stated goals identified.
- Scheduled homework assignments addressing the evaluation areas are provided.
These assignments become progressively more difficult and require approximately 5 to 7 hours per month to complete.
- Scheduled telephone consultation visits are planned twice per month.
Each session averages 45 minutes to 1 hour.
The clinician must send the homework assignment to the consultant approximately 3 days in advance of the scheduled meeting.
The consultant will analyze the assignment and offer feedback during the phone meeting.
Also, during the phone meeting, the consultant is available to answer questions and offer assistance with any challenges the clinician is facing.
Total monthly billable time including telephone conference, periodic email correspondence, and analysis of homework assignment averages 3-4 hours.
The participant is billed monthly for the consultation hours used in 15 minute increments.
- After successful completion of the program (approximately 6-9 months) the clinician is awarded a certificate from Dementia Care Specialists, Inc. which
indicates the clinician has become an “Allen Master Clincian”.
This can allow you to identify yourself as a clinical specialist in the area of dementia therapy.
- DCS maintains a log of those who have completed the program and will refer to you if desired.
We occasionally receive phone calls from individuals around the states looking for experts in this area.
- Those who successfully complete the program are eligible to join the Dementia Care Specialists, Inc. training and consulting team as PRN opportunities become available.
