Kim graduated from the University of Illinois in 1989 with a B.S. degree in Occupational Therapy. Kim is an expert in the administration and application of cognitive models including the Cognitive Disabilities Model developed by Claudia Allen and the Theory of Retrogenesis developed by Dr. Barry Reisberg.
Kim has successfully woven together her extensive theoretical and practical knowledge to create innovative, abilities-oriented interdisciplinary training and care programs to help persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) to thrive. These programs have been implemented in many long-term care organizations including Provision Living, Parc Provence, HCR Manor Care and LifeCare Centers of America to name a few.
She has authored numerous dementia care articles, she lectures nationally on various topics related to dementia management and aging, and she is passionate about advocating for the needs and rights of people with ADRD.
Kim has been invited to sit on many committees and boards in which she has the opportunity to share her passion and expertise to help make life a better place for those living with ADRD. Kim is most proud of her participation in a committee that approached Medicare/CMS in 2001 with a strong argument against denial of therapy services based solely on a diagnosis of ADRD. The work of Kim, the Alzheimer’s Association and other advocates led to the September 2001 Medicare/CMS memorandum restricting denial of OT/PT/ST based solely on a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. Kim is honored to be able to serve people with ADRD and to be a current member of the board of the Allen Cognitive Network.
